ICCTA Gigi Campbell

Student Trustee Excellence Award
2010 Recipient

Cody Sheriff
McHenry County College

"One year ago, I was working 39 hours a week on the midnight shift with no aspirations to succeed and a dismal outlook to the future; today, I am a highly motivated student trustee at McHenry County College," says Cody Sheriff.

He credits McHenry County College's faculty and staff for helping him to overcome severe anxiety and depression and to learn coping skills for living with Asperger's Syndrome. He also credit MCC's Fitness Center for helping him "get in shape" physically and lose 100 lbs.

During his 2009-2010 term on the MCC board, Sheriff strived to be "the voice of the students" and regularly communicated their concerns to his trustee colleagues. As a member of the Presidential Search Committee, he surveyed his fellow students to learn what characteristics they felt were essential for McHenry's future leader.

He was so committed to meeting and talking with students that he even dressed as McHenry's mascot and walked through the halls to attract attention.

Active in nearly all 26 of the college's student organizations, Sheriff is a founder of the "Blue Crew" spirit group. At the state level, he served as Accountability Officer for the Illinois Community College Board's Student Advisory Committee.
