ICCTA Advocacy Award

2010 Recipient

Dr. John Erwin
Illinois Central College

Dr. John Erwin has led Illinois Central College as its president since 2001. This year he has served double-duty as chair of the Illinois Presidents Council.

Not surprisingly, his term has been dominated by the budget crisis affecting community colleges and the state of Illinois.

Under Erwin's leadership, the Council worked with the Trustees Association to successfully restore full funding for adult education and career and technical education programs for fiscal year 2009.

He also joined with university presidents in fall 2009 to meet with Governor Patrick Quinn regarding the underfunding of student financial aid.

Erwin has also changed the way the Presidents Council conducts its meetings. Council committees were restructured to improve efficiency and to better align with the Illinois Board of Higher Education's strategic plan,Public Agenda for College and Career Success. The Council also sponsored its first orientation for new community college presidents in September 2009.
