Open Meetings Act Training
In fall 2011, the Illinois General Assembly passed and Gov. Pat Quinn signed into law
House Bill 1670.
This law, which is now Public Act 97-0504 and codified
in Section 1.05(b) of the Open Meetings Act (See 5 ILCS 120/1.05(b)), requires that all elected and appointed members of a
public body (such as a public community college board of trustees) who are such members of a public body on January 1, 2012,
must take the Attorney General's electronic Open Meetings Act training by December 31, 2012.
All of those who are elected or appointed after January 1, 2012, have 90 days to complete the training. The member is required to
provide the public body with a certificate of completion of the training.
The Illinois Attorney General's Office has adjusted its electronic training website to include a training session specific for
public officials. It is now available at http://foia.ilattorneygeneral.net/Default.aspx.
If you feel that you may need to practice beforehand, you can go to the AG's General
Public Training section at http://foia.ilattorneygeneral.net/Training.aspx.
